Pattern Fish
In this project, we will explore the fascinating concept of patterns through a fun and interactive art activity. Just like the stripes on a zebra or the dots on a ladybug, patterns add beauty and interest to everything around us. So, grab your paintbrushes - well, actually, q-tips in this case - and let's create our own patterned masterpiece inspired by the aquatic world: the Pattern Fish!
The Project
Materials Needed:
- 1 sheet of 9" x 12" white paper per student
- 3 - 4 small plates or one paint pallet of tempura paint for each table (3 tables)
- Use 3-4 colors of paint for this project.
- 3 - 5 q-tips for each plate of paint
Parent Prep Before the Project: About 15-20 Min
- Cut white construction paper into half making 9" x 12" pieces of paper.
- Trace a fish outline onto the paper using a black sharpie.
Demonstration:
- Begin by reading the book "Pattern Fish" to the students to introduce the concept of patterns.
- Conduct a step-by-step demonstration of the entire project for the students. Do this on a carpeted area where all students can see clearly. This helps them understand what's expected and provides a visual guide.
Project Instructions:
- Students should write their names on the back of their half-sized white paper
- Distribute the plates or paint pallets of tempura paint and q-tips to each table, ensuring there's enough for everyone.
- Instruct the students to choose a color and dip a q-tip into that paint. They should use the q-tip to create a pattern on their fish shape. This pattern can be a stripe, dot, dashes, or any other design they like.
- Once they've completed their pattern with one color, they can switch to another color by using a new q-tip. Encourage them to continue the pattern and create a visually interesting design.
- Students should repeat the process of dipping q-tips into different colors and continuing their chosen pattern until the entire fish shape is covered with colors and patterns.
- After completing their patterns, students can set aside their projects to allow the paint to dry.
