Tempera paint is one of the first known paints. It is originally made out of colored pigment and the use of egg yolk as a binder. Tempera paint artwork has been found as far back as the 1st century AD and is still in good condition today. It is a long lasting paint and was used primarily until after 1500 when oil paint was invented.
The term Tempera Paint is used throughout schools today, but is really poster paint. The binder of egg yolk is no longer used (no worries about any salmonella in the schools). This new modern tempera paint is very versatile to use in an elementary setting. They are easy to paint with, washable, and have bright vibrant colors.
