Fifth Grade
Colorful Architecture
When we think of architecture, we think of buildings, shops, or homes. Ordinary, box-like structures built of wood or brick or steel and glass. But sometimes architects (the artists who design buildings) design special buildings that are more than that. The buildings become symbols of a culture, time, or way of life. Such as the ancient ruins in Greece and Rome. These buildings speak about a way of life and culture that may be long gone, but the buildings stand as reminders of the past. Another ancient example would be the Egyptian pyramids.
These buildings are symbolic of that entire ancient civilization. Some other famous works of more modern architecture are the Sydney Opera house in Australia, the Taj Mahal in India, The forbidden City in China, The Hagia Sophia in Turkey, The Chrysler Building in New York, The Gherkin in London, The Westminster Abbey in London, The Lotus Temple in India.

These are just a few examples of the vast number of creations all over the world. Today we are going to highlight the unique Architecture of Russia. Russia’s unique dome shaped roofs decorated with bright colors and unique textures make the buildings a rich part of their culture and history.
Here are some images from the iconic Red Square in Moscow. Notice how bright and colorful the buildings are. This square is home to many important buildings. You have the Kremlin, it’s Armory, Lenin’s Mausoleum, and Saint Basil’s Cathedral all located in the Red Square. The buildings remind me of children’s stories. What do they make you think of?
Here is another brightly colored wonder the Kolomenskoye. It was the summer residence of the tsars.
Russia’s Churches are some of the most iconic and colorful building they have. Here is the Church of Nativity of Saint John the Baptist in St. Petersburg. This one looks like a candy cane to me. And here is the Church of Transfiguration, Kizhi Island. What does this building make you think of? And then we have the Church of Holy Igor in Moscow, and the Church of our lady Kazan or the “red church” in Siberia. This is the Stroganov Church in Nizhny Novgorod. And the Cathedral of the Assumption in Omsk. As you can see Russia’s Colorful Architecture is a beautiful example of the art that can be made by the Architects of our world.

the project
The Project
Prep - 45 min. (includes making sample)
Print - Use 8 x 10 architectural copies in 5th grade file cabinet
Materials
9 x 12 white construction paper per student
markers (2 boxes)
black Sharpie markers (check out in office)
oil pastels
rulers
Lesson
1. Show students the different architectural pictures. Define the word Architecture for the students, Architecture - is the process and the product of planning, designing, and constructing buildings and other physical structures. Ask the students, is Architecture art? Let them tell you why they think it is or is not. The correct answer is "Yes." Talk about the different types of architecture in each picture. What is similar and different between the different buildings?
2. Show the students your sample and explain that today they will all get to be their own architects. Show them how you used your ruler to draw the lines of the buildings. Tell the students that today they will draw their buildings in the style of Russian architecture.
3. Show them how you drew doors, windows, and details on each building with pencil. After you drew with pencil you used black Sharpies to trace over all your lines and then colored in your buildings with markers.
4. Ask them if they can see the difference in your sky? Ask the students if they know what medium you used to create the sky? Medium - the element of art used to create an art project. By fifth grade you should have at least one student recognize the use of oil pastels. Ask them what the difference is between oil pastels and markers. Oil pastels are very dense and are made from a non-drying oil and wax to bind it together. They are different from chalk pastels in that they create a harder edge (doesn't smear) and are harder to blend.
Art Project
-pass out paper and rulers to each student (name on back of paper)
-have students use their pencil and rulers to start drawing their buildings.
-encourage them to fill up their paper (use paper vertically)
-when students feel they are done drawing their buildings and details in pencil, have them raise their hands to have parent helpers check and hand them a black Sharpie
-students trace over all pencil lines with a black Sharpie
-students turn in black Sharpies when they are done and collect markers to start coloring their buildings
-have students turn in their markers when they are done and collect a box of oil pastels
-have students create a sky design with their oil pastels
-have students turn in their Sharpies, oil pastels, ruler, and markers
*please take all art supplies back to the art room and put them away
