Veteran's Day - Paper Lanterns - Coast Guard
Veterans Day is the day that we honor all the men and women that have served in the armed forces of our military. These men and women do a great many things for our nations while sacrificing much.
Veterans day began as Armistice Day. Armistice Day was when a ceasefire was signed before the end of World War I. It was held on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. This day was not the end of the war, but it was the day the fighting stopped.
In 1938 Armistice Day was turned into a legal holiday. At first this holiday was to celebrate only the veterans of World War I, but in 1954 they decided to make it a holiday to honor All Veterans. There are Six groups that make up our Armed Forces.
The Coastguard, The Navy, The Army, The Air Force, The Marines, The Space Force
Today we are going to take a closer look at our Coastguard. The Coast guard is tasked with protecting our coastlines during both peace and war-time. During the peaceful times, on an average day, the United States Coast Guard saves 12 lives, responds to 64 search and rescue cases, and services 116 buoys.
They are the men and women that when your boat gets in trouble during a storm, they will go out to help. During the aftermath of storms, earthquakes, hurricanes, and floods, they help the people that are stranded or hurt and bring in much needed supplies of food and water.
They even help researchers in Alaska to break ice for research ships to bring supplies and people to places that are hard to reach.
Most lighthouses are now run by the Coast guard as well. The lights that help bring people safely home when they are out to sea.
They regulate fisheries to keep people from overfishing. They also clean up oil spills and protect the environment.
