Veteran's Day Flag PLate - Army
Veterans Day is the day that we honor all the men and women that have served in the armed forces of our military. These men and women do a great many things for our nations while sacrificing much.
Veterans day began as Armistice Day. Armistice Day was when a ceasefire was signed before the end of World War I. It was held on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. This day was not the end of the war, but it was the day the fighting stopped.
In 1938 Armistice Day was turned into a legal holiday. At first this holiday was to celebrate only the veterans of World War I, but in 1954 they decided to make it a holiday to honor All Veterans. There are Six groups that make up our Armed Forces.
The Coastguard, The Navy, The Army, The Air Force, The Marines, The Space Force
Today we are going to look into the Army. The Army is the oldest branch of the military with its roots dating back to the American Revolutionary War. In 1775 the Continental Army was formed. The Declaration of Independence wasn’t signed until July 4th, 1776, which means that the Army is actually older than our nation itself.
The first commander for the Army was George Washington. Since then 16 United States Presidents have served in the Army.
The Army is the fighting force for land combat. These days their primary objectives are preserving the peace, and security for Defense of the United States and the areas occupied by the United States.

- Cut the strips of yarn and wrap the ends in a small piece of tape scotch or masking tape.
- Cut the blue squares for the stars corner.
- On the side of each student's desk place a strip of masking tape. (around 6 inches long)
- They will cut/tear pieces of tape to attach the yarn to the plate.
Project
- Start by making the stars on the blue construction paper.
- Using the Q-tip and the white paint have the students make the 50 stars on the blue construction paper. The pattern is 6 stars, the offset with 5 and then 6 again.
- 5 rows of 6 stars and 4 rows of 5 stars (you can draw the pattern on the board for the students to follow)
- Set aside to dry.
- You can also have volunteers collect the paint and wash them after this step.
- Starting with the red yarn, have the students cut a small piece of tape from their desk and tape one edge of the yarn on the back of the plate at the top.
- Then tread through the top holes across the top of the plate to make a long stripe.
- After the red comes from the front to the back, have them skip a set of holes on the same side and brink back across the front again. (photo below)
- Repeat with the white string.
- Using the masking tape gently tape your blue square to the strings of yarn.
